Before she became an actor, she began modeling as a child model. She was awarded the Theatre World Award as "one of the most promising performers for 1956-57" for her performance in The Potting Shed. Lynley began her career in film in the year 1958, with her debut in the Disney film The Light in the Forest. She was followed by Holiday for Lovers (1959), and Blue Denim (1959). In 1959, she was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Most Promising Newcomer - Female in the film The Light in the Forest. The following year, she was nominated again for the Golden Globe Award as Most Promising Female Newcomer.
